Before Anesthesia and Sedation
Proper preparation before your surgical appointment ensures your safety and comfort during the procedure. If you will receive IV sedation or general anesthesia, you must not eat or drink anything, including water, for eight hours before your scheduled appointment time. This fasting period prevents complications during sedation. Smoking should stop at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, you should reduce or eliminate smoking as soon as possible before your procedure.
Day of Surgery Requirements
A responsible adult must accompany you to the office, remain during the procedure, and drive you home afterward. You should not drive a vehicle or operate machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia. Wear loose-fitting clothing with sleeves that can be rolled up past the elbow and low-heeled shoes. Remove contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures at the time of surgery.
What to Avoid
Skip lipstick, excessive makeup, and nail polish on the day of surgery. If you develop a cold, sore throat, stomach upset, or other illness, notify our office. If you take routine oral medications, check with Dr. Verrillo about continuing them before your surgical date.
